Small Dog Friendly Accommodation & Luxury Cottages, Maleny, Sunshine Coast

There is a particular kind of joy that comes from snuggling up with your fur baby while you sip a freshly brewed Nespresso on your private verandah, with the fog lifting slowly over Lake Baroon and the Conondale Ranges. It is the kind of moment that reminds you why you booked the escape in the first place — and it is exactly the experience waiting for you at Lillypillys Country Cottages, nestled in the lush hinterland above Maleny on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

For too long, travelling with a beloved pet meant choosing between comfort and compromise. You either left your dog behind with a guilty conscience or settled for basic accommodation that tolerated animals rather than welcomed them.

At Lillypillys, that false choice does not exist. All five private cottages are dog-friendly, making this one of the most genuinely luxurious dog-friendly holiday accommodation on the Sunshine Coast — a place where indulgence and your four-legged companion coexist beautifully.

Why Maleny Is the Perfect Dog Friendly Destination on the Sunshine Coast

Perched at an elevation of 425 metres in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Maleny is one of those rare Queensland towns that rewards slow travel. The air is crisp and clean, the streets are unhurried, and the surrounding countryside rolls out in wide green sweeps that seem to exhale calm. For dog owners especially, the region is a dream — wide open spaces, cool temperatures that suit dogs far better than the coastal heat, with some excellent scenic trails and creek walks that beg to be explored together.

The Maleny area is home to cooperative dairies, artisan providores, independent galleries, and a genuine community spirit that makes visitors feel like they belong rather than just passing through. Stroll the main street, visit the Maple Street Co-op, and discover why so many guests return to this corner of the Sunshine Coast hinterland year after year. When you bring your dog along, the experience only deepens — every ramble feels richer with a happy companion trotting alongside.

Lillypillys Country Cottages: Luxury That Leaves Nobody Behind

After many years in hospitality, Lillypillys was established in 1996 by Josef and Adele, built on a simple but exacting philosophy: provide fine food, quality service, and excellence in every detail. Three decades on, that ethos still runs through every aspect of the property. The result is a boutique retreat that feels like a cherished family home rather than a hotel, where the hosts genuinely care that you leave restored.

Set on a peaceful ridge along Maleny–Montville Road at Balmoral Ridge, the property enjoys uninterrupted views across Lake Baroon and the Conondale Ranges. Each of the four studio-style cottages has been individually designed and appointed to maximise both comfort and that sense of complete seclusion. Whether you choose the signature Lakeview Deluxe cottage or settle into the Garden cottage surrounded by tropical rainforest sounds, you arrive in a space that feels prepared just for you — and for your dog.

4 Unique Dog-Friendly Holiday Accommodation in Maleny

Every cottage shares the same luxury foundations — reverse cycle air conditioning, wood fire, double spa bath, queen bed with ensuite, BBQ on the verandah, kitchenette with Nespresso pod machine, flat screen TV, Netflix, DVD player, and sound system — yet each delivers its own distinct experience of the Maleny landscape.

Lakeview Deluxe Cottages

The pinnacle of the Lillypillys collection, the Lakeview Deluxe cottages offer uninterrupted views of Lake Baroon and the Conondale Ranges from the lounge, bedroom, spa bath, and verandah — the bifold doors dissolving the boundary between indoors and the panorama beyond. Stretch out on the outdoor day bed for two as the sun sinks behind the ranges, then draw the doors closed and let the wood fire take over. These are cottages built for romance, for anniversaries, and for the kind of deep rest that city life steadily erodes.

Lakeview Cottage

The Lakeview cottage frames the rolling hills and lake through the verandah and a pergola-style deck, creating an outdoor living experience that connects you to the landscape. Watch the mist burn off the water over morning coffee, see the colours shift through the afternoon, and observe the horizon disappear at dusk as the night sky takes hold. A spa bath with valley views ensures that the sense of immersion continues long after you have stepped indoors.

Valleyview Cottage

The Valleyview cottage offers filtered valley views from the verandah, lounge, and bedroom, with a spacious deck, an outdoor day bed, and two lounge chairs that invites unhurried stargazing on clear nights. Crank up the wood fire, ease into the spa bath, and wake to a freshly prepared hot breakfast brought directly to your cottage door. The sense of being cared for here is quietly remarkable — small gestures that accumulate into genuine renewal.

Garden Cottage

The Garden cottage is an immersive sensory experience of a different kind — less the open vista, more the living breathing embrace of a tropical garden rainforest. Frogs, birds, and cicadas compose an evening chorus unlike anything you will hear in the city. A day bed on the verandah invites afternoon napping, glimpses of the distant valley remind you of your elevated perch, and the luxurious spa bath inside offers its own kind of sanctuary when the night cools.

Enjoy the best in luxury and comfort

With stunning views of Lake Baroon and the Conondale Ranges, Lillypillys Cottages & Day Spa is the perfect place to escape city life, experience the tranquility of nature, and the welcome of country hospitality.

What Dog Friendly Actually Means at Lillypillys

The word ‘dog friendly’ covers a wide spectrum in Australian accommodation — from a grudging single room that allows small dogs with a hefty surcharge, to properties that have genuinely thought through what it means to welcome a dog and their owner with equal warmth. Lillypillys sits firmly in the latter category. All five cottages welcome one small-medium sized non-malting or low-malting breed of dog per cottage, at management’s discretion, ensuring that every stay remains comfortable and immaculate for all guests.

The property’s approach is loving but practical. Dogs are welcome in the cottage but are not to be left unattended — which, on reflection, is simply good travel practice. The surrounding environment is spectacular, and the grounds offer space for your dog to stretch, sniff, and explore to their heart’s content. Having your companion close throughout the stay is part of what makes it a holiday rather than a separation.

Beyond the cottage itself, the Maleny hinterland is rich with dog-friendly trails and walking tracks. The walking track from Maleny is great for dogs, and you can do the 5km loop around the golf course if wanting a longer walk, and the area around Lake Baroon offers peaceful lakeside paths; the surrounding countryside roads wind quietly through farmland that is a delight at dusk. Your dog will sleep as soundly as you do after a day of hinterland exploration followed by an evening beside the wood fire.

In-Cottage Dining

One of the most distinctive features of a Lillypillys stay is the in-cottage dining experience. There is something quietly indulgent about having a superbly prepared meal delivered to your private verandah or cottage door — no restaurant booking, no driving, no leaving your dog behind. You simply settle into the atmosphere you have created for yourselves and allow the food to arrive.

Josef’s background as executive chef at the Sebel Townhouse in Sydney underpins a dining philosophy that prizes quality, freshness, and care. The in-cottage meals are not a compromise; they are a centrepiece. From leisurely evening dinners served as the sun dips behind the ranges to freshly prepared hot breakfasts brought to your cottage door each morning, the food at Lillypillys is a reason to stay in as much as the views and the spa bath.

Packages for Every Occasion — From Romantic Escapes to Elopements

Lillypillys has long been a destination for couples seeking something beyond the ordinary. The property offers a range of curated packages designed for romantic weekend getaways, anniversary celebrations, last-minute escapes, and all-inclusive elopements. The intimacy of five private cottages, combined with in-cottage dining, creates an environment that feels designed entirely around the two of you — with your dog quietly curled at your feet.

Returning guests are rewarded through Rusty’s Rewards, in memory of our fur baby — a little something extra for our guests that acknowledge that the Lillypillys experience, once discovered, tends to become a fixture rather than a one-off. Many couples mark the same anniversary here every year, finding that the place renews them just as reliably as it did the first time.

Getting to Maleny from Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast

Lillypillys is located at 584 Maleny–Montville Road, Balmoral Ridge, just 8kms from Maleny and 6kms from Montville. The drive from Brisbane takes approximately one hour to one hour and a half — close enough for a long weekend, far enough to feel genuinely removed from everyday life. From the Sunshine Coast, Maleny is a scenic thirty-minute drive away, rising steadily through green hills, as the coastal views open up, and the air gets cooler.

The journey itself is part of the experience. The Maleny–Montville Road winds through some of the most beautiful pastoral country in Southeast Queensland, and arriving by car allows you to carry everything your dog needs for a comfortable stay — bedding, leads, familiar toys — without the constraints of air travel. It is one of the genuine advantages of a hinterland retreat: the whole trip, door to door, unfolds at your own pace.

Who Is Lillypillys For?

Lillypillys suits couples more than groups — the five private cottages are designed for two, and the quiet intimacy of the property is best appreciated at a leisurely pace rather than a social one. It is perfect for anyone who wants luxury accommodation in Maleny without sacrificing the company of their dog; and for anyone planning a romantic escape on the Sunshine Coast who wants to eat well without leaving their cottage.

It is also, quietly, for people who are simply tired. Tired of the noise, the schedules, the relentlessness of modern life. The property’s tagline — Stay. Dine. Renew. — is not marketing copy; it is a sequence. You arrive, you settle, you eat well, you sleep deeply, and something in you releases that you had forgotten was held tight. That is the Lillypillys effect, and it does not require a long holiday to achieve it. A single night is enough to begin.

All our cottages are dog friendly.

Whilst we welcome one small non malting or low malting breed of dog per cottage, at the management’s discretion, it must be well trained and well behaved.

Dogs must not be left alone in the cottage, and they are not allowed on the bed or lounge. A $100 cleaning fee will be imposed if this rule is not adhered to, or if there is extra cleaning required on checkout. Should any linen be ruined due to a dog spending time on the bed, this will also be charged accordingly … dog hair does not completely come out of bed linen, and is therefore no longer usable.
